Obama Drops Plans To Speak At Berlin's Brandenburg Gate

AHN

Obama will not be making his speech in Berlin before the Brandenburg Gate but at Victory Column, German news agency Deutshe Well said on Friday.

Obama will leaving for Europe and the Middle East next week in what pundits say is a bid to bolster his foreign policy and national security credentials. The presumptive Democratic nominee will make the much-awaited speech in Berlin on July 24.

Obama will still have the Brandenburg Gate as backdrop since the iconic site sits at the opposite end of a tree-line boulevard from the Victory Column.

The German newspaper Der Spiegel said last week that the presumptive Democratic nominee was considering speaking in front of the Brandenburg Gate, the site of the famous speech given by former President Ronald Reagan in 1987 that called on former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this wall."

The report was met with little enthusiasm by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who said last week during the G8 Summit in Japan that it was up to Obama to find an appropriate location for his speech but that doing so at the historic site would be "a bit odd."

German government spokesman Thomas Steq later on made clear Merkel's stand on the issue by saying, "It is unusual to do electioneering abroad... No German candidate for high office would even think of using the National Mall (in Washington) or Red Square in Moscow for a rally because it would not be seen as appropriate," according to The Age.

Erwin Huber, head of Germany's Christian Social Union (CSU), was also reported by the BBC as saying last week, "Obama didn't do anything for German unification... That's not a criticism, but as a result there is no reason to grant him such a privilege."

Some German officials, such as Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told the Frankfurter Rundschau and Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit, welcomed the idea of Obama speaking at the historic site but the strong opposition triggered speculation on the Internet that the White House had pressured the Merkel to deny Obama's plans. The White House has refuted such reports.

Obama will be meeting privately with Merkel in Berlin the same day he makes his speech, according to a German spokesman cited by Time.

Wild Thing's comment........

What a self-absorbed JERK. B.Hussein Obama learned that many in Germany, from Merkel on down, were not impressed with his plan to exploit their historic symbol. Yep - just what we need in a CIC - another example of his abysmal judgment and ignorance of history.

Obamanation is a psychotic village idiot. I remember, my psychology instructor telling us that we're all a little neurotic--we all build castles in the air; but a psychotic not only builds those castles, but lives there as well.
This man is a danger to himself and the population. They lock people up for being like he is. Maybe an extended stay at Bellevue in NY or the Norfolk regional center here in Nebraska would knock him down to reality.

Yes, he should be speaking somewhere in Africa. That is where he has promised to send so much American taxpayer money to fight poverty. Like he has done so much to fight poverty(and crime) in Chicago by living in luxury.

How 'bout on the 'Amos n' Andy' show. That would surely be a hit. Makes about as much sense as anything else this guy does.

It is legitimate for Barack Obama, a Presidential candidate, to go on a fact-finding tour in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as to meet with government leaders in the Middle East and Europe as well as to discuss world and national affairs with them. However, it is another thing to turn the trip into a political campaign rally event that includes violations of the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA).

According to press reports, "local sources in Berlin are confirming that the Obama campaign was in contact with city authorities to discuss the possibility of presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) delivering an outdoor address in front of the Brandenburg gate. The thinking is Obama would follow in the footsteps of two very famous Cold War-era speeches of U.S. presidents speaking in Germany: JFK "Ich bin ein Berliner" and Reagan "tear down this wall." It would probably be Obama's only public speech during upcoming visits to Germany, France and England on a swing to include stops in Israel and Jordan."

The key issue is that JFK and Ronald Reagan were "sitting" U.S. presidents when they spoke in Germany. Speaking at the Brandenburg Gate or, now, the Victory Column would obviously be "campaigning" by the Democratic Party's presumptive presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama. As such, which governments and government agencies will be providing security, crowd control, traffic control, sanitation, sanitation cleanup, and other related support for this U.S. federal candidate's political rally in Berlin?

Will all of this campaign support budget money come from the city of Berlin or will some of the security come from the German government too? Either way, foreign governments are considered "foreign nationals" by the FECA and prohibited from contributing, donating or spending funds in connection with any federal, state, or local election in the United States, either directly or indirectly.

For more information on the FECA go to:
http://www.fec.gov/pages/brochures/foreign.shtml

"The Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) prohibits any foreign national from contributing, donating or spending funds in connection with any federal, state, or local election in the United States, either directly or indirectly. It is also unlawful to help foreign nationals violate that ban or to solicit, receive or accept contributions or donations from them."
--------------------
"The following groups and individuals are considered "foreign nationals" and are, therefore, subject to the prohibition:

* Foreign governments;
* Foreign political parties;
* Foreign corporations;........"
