He is at the heart of a great culture war in Texas – and the nation, credited with bringing us prosperity and blamed for abusing our resources. How should we deal with this stranger among us?He breaks the law by his very presence. He hustles to do hard work many Americans won't, at least not at the low wages he accepts. The American consumer economy depends on him. America as we have known it for generations may not survive him.
He's the Illegal Immigrant, and he's the 2007 Dallas Morning News Texan of the Year – for better or for worse.

If critics are correct, we could be seeing the advent of the kind of fractiousness that bedevils public life in Canada and other nations where peoples who speak different languages, and come from different cultural backgrounds, live together only with mutual suspicion and unease.On the other hand, perhaps the alarmists are wrong. Maybe these ambitious, hard-working immigrants, whatever their documentation, will write the next great chapter of a story that’s still deeply American, though with a different accent. If the optimists are right, much work remains to be done to incorporate all immigrants fully into new cultural traditions.
We end 2007 no closer to compromise on the issue than when the year began. People waging a culture war – and that’s what the struggle over illegal immigration is – don’t give up easily. What you think of the illegal immigrant says a lot about what you think of America, and what vision of her you are willing to defend. How we deal with the stranger among us says not only who we Americans are today but determines who we will become tomorrow.

This article is so wrong in so many ways. First of all to give illegal's a nod in any way is wrong from the get go. They are illegal, they are law breakers, they show NO respect for our country and the laws set up already for immigration. Immigration for GOOD people that wait and wait as they follow the legal way to enter our country.
Illegal's that many are not only Mexican but also terrorists and a major threat to our United States of America.
My grandparents, my husband's parents, your relatives all came here obeying our immigration laws. Our leaders, our news media are making excuses for these illegal's and it only encourages them like a high five to keep pouring in by the droves.
A fence unfinished when it was promised to Duncan Hunter and others. Border Patrol Agents in jail for doing their job. WTF
And now this to make the illegal immigrants the Texan of the year is treasonous!

Like our newspaper here is owned by the NY Times and is as slanted as can be, it is sickening.

Hopefully this editorial will be the end of the Dallas Mo(u)rning News. Like most newspapers, it is liberally slanted, and like most big city newspapers it is dying from declining readership. Most uf us Texans, including lots of legal and native Hispanics, disagree with this editorial.
The trouble is that people with lots of power here such as this young editor, our governor, powerful business interests and racist Hispanic leaders are all for massive illegal immigration.
I would like to say that as a Dallas resident that I will no longer read the DMN. However, I quit reading it three years ago anyway. Thank God for the Internet and the many good informative blog sites like Theodore's World.

While I have the deepest respect and love for Texan's I'm sorely dissappointed by the Austin crowd that gave us Ann Willis Richards. Why any American would want to invite the corruption and decline in living standards to their homeland by lowering their own standards is beyond my comprehension. I have lived amongst and around Mexicans, both legal and illegal immigrants all my life, I even have a legal immigrant Mexican brother in law and fellow servicemember who dispises what is going on. Honoring thieves just doesn't make any sense to me. I'm so disappointed that the one state admired for it's independence has succumbed to the pandering so popular by GW Bush.
It's so sickening, I refuse to buy the trash printed as 'news' here and would never consider subscribing. They put stands up near the doors of the shopping centers trying to enlist subscribers, I politely refuse, if they persist every one around gets an earfull of why I don't support their leftist rag.

The article was written by their resident CINO, Conservative in Name Only, Rod Dreher. He is apart of an Editorial Board that looks more like that of the New York Times than something from Texas. It is why people like me subscribe to the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

Tom, we did the same thing here with our paper. The one we get now is from a near by city that has a paper that is not too bad.

i,I agree, I wonder what people do when they don't use the internet and are stuck with liberal papers, liberal news shows like CNN. Even Fox is not totally innocent.
