Brownback To Drop White House Bid

Republican expected to withdraw from ’08 race on Friday

WASHINGTON (AP)

Republican Sam Brownback will drop out of the 2008 presidential campaign on Friday, people close to the Kansas senator told NBC News Thursday.

Trouble raising money was a main reason for his decision, said one person close to Brownback, who requested anonymity because the candidate had not yet announced his plans.

Brownback, a lesser-known conservative contender, is expected announce his withdrawal in Topeka, Kan.

The senator is widely expected to seek the Kansas governor’s office in 2010, when his term—his second—expires. He had promised in his first Senate campaign to serve no more than two terms.

Brownback had raised a little more than $800,000 from July through September and around $4 million overall. He is eligible for $2 million in federal matching funds.

Besides money, Brownback’s support for a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants hurt him in Iowa, an early-voting state that has struggled to provide education, medical care and other services as the number of immigrants has more than doubled since 1990.

Wild Thing's comment........

1. Immigration—he developed the “Switchback Brownback” moniker for a reason.

2. Iraq—Joining up with Joe Biden of all people for an Iraq plan isn’t going to endear him to conservatives.

Just my take. Not sure if he will turn his votes over to Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter or who it will be if any of the others. We will have to wait and see I guess.

Can he take Ron Paul with him? He's a good pro-life family man but 'nice' guys finish last, and his illegal immigration amnesty position was wrong. Brownback & Al Gore BORE you to death with their passive and dull monotones!

I sort of figured he would. He's not been at the top since the beginning of the campaign and he's not Presidential enough. He just doesn't have the gift.
Not that he's not smart, this job just isn't the right fit for him.
And yes, please take Ron Paul away.
We have it figured that Ron will refuse to leave, split the vote and we'll end up with Hitlery anyway. He's this seasons Ross Perot. Is Ron on Hitlery's payroll?

Brownback is doing the right thing. He had little chance and there are too many candidates right now. Immigration killed his chances.

I really don't think Ron Paul will pull many votes from a true Conservative. Paul is loony and has the fringe elements from both the right and left. Ross Perot had appeal to lots of people including Conservatives and he was running against a very weak incumbant, Bush 41. That was a race very different from this one. No, I don't believe Ron Paul is worth worrying about.

Lynn I agree, Ron Paul is this seasons Ross Perot. And worse.

Tom, I agree no conservative would ever vote for Ron Paul. He voted against the Patriot Act. Voted against dealing with Israel and all kinds of things, plus he is a nut case.

PS: So what Brownback is really saying is that Brownback didn't receive enough Greenbacks for his Wetbacks... QB + HB + FB = $1.75 ?
