UC Irvine's Campus

Once a sleepy suburban university, UCI has joined the ranks of Columbia University and UC Berkeley as a hotbed of anti-Zionism. The situation has become so tense that the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights — in reaction to a complaint filed by the conservative Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) — is investigating allegations of anti-Jewish harassment at UCI and administration indifference.

The latest attack happened the weekend of October 8, a student housing building was defaced with swastikas.

So what happened, how was this taken care of?

The Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Manuel Gomez held a meeting. And this is what he said:

"Some of the Jewish students at the meeting revealed that they and others had been subject to verbal and physical intimidation at the hands of MSU members, and that they had previously reported these claims to campus security. In light of this, some students asked that Drake place restrictions on where MSU events are held, saying that if their events were held in classrooms as opposed to public spaces, their effect would not be as broad. However, Chancellor Drake told Jewish students at the meeting that he cannot restrict any club, that it would be “violation of law to prohibit certain speech.” Gomez emphasized that though hate speech may be present, he would not seek to curtail it, as “one person’s hate speech is another person’s education.”

"Every time we fought in the name of Allah, we always won... we are not afraid of THEM".

More than a dozen Jewish student leaders met with Chancellor Michael Drake and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Manuel Gomez on Wednesday, October 18 to discuss the recent anti-Semitic vandalism here amidst a broader discussion about how Jewish students feel they are treated. This meeting marked the first time that the chancellor met with Jewish students about their concerns over the atmosphere on campus since his installation 15 months ago.

The students present expressed their displeasure regarding the current tense situation on campus between Muslim and Jewish students and the recent vandalism.

“I hate that things like this happen,” Drake responded, acknowledging that there has been speech on campus promoted by the Muslim Student Union (MSU) that is largely hateful. Drake called hate-speech “vile,” “awful,” and “stupid,” and said it is “weak” human beings who engage in such speech. The chancellor also asserted that hateful speech does absolutely nothing to promote understanding and tolerance.

Many Jewish students at the meeting blamed the Muslim Student Union for creating an environment in which hate speech can prosper, which they felt had a direct connection to the vandalism.

Some of the Jewish students at the meeting revealed that they and others had been subject to verbal and physical intimidation at the hands of MSU members, and that they had previously reported these claims to campus security. In light of this, some students asked that Drake place restrictions on where MSU events are held, saying that if their events were held in classrooms as opposed to public spaces, their effect would not be as broad.

However, Chancellor Drake told Jewish students at the meeting that he cannot restrict any club, that it would be “violation of law to prohibit certain speech.”
Gomez emphasized that though hate speech may be present, he would not seek to curtail it, as “one person’s hate speech is another person’s education.”

Drake stated that it is not in the power of the University of California to prohibit speech on campus in any fashion because it would be against the constitutional rights of individuals.

Students at the meeting pointed to the fact that there have been threats, verbal and physical, and that the university should do more in order to ensure the safety of Jewish students. I invited Drake to come to AFI events and other Jewish events, and he said that he would plan to attend a Shabbat dinner, and speak at an AFI event.

Jewish leaders on campus left the meeting with mixed feelings. On one hand, it is clear to the Jewish community that the administration is attempting to be supportive and helpful. On the other hand, many students worry that, as happened here, UCI personnel will take action only after students are directly and obviously targeted, as opposed to confronting the growing problem before such results occur.

And who is this Amir Abdel Malik Ali??

Rabidly anti-Israel, anti-Semitic public speaker whose presentations consist of fiirebrand rhetoric and openly hostile speech
Lectures on college campuses and at Muslim Student Association events

He is openly hostile to Jews, he is also a strong supporter of an Islamic revolution in the United States. He is clear about the strategy for implementing it.

"From an Islamic movement we graduate to an Islamic revolution, then to an Islamic state. . . . We must implement Islam as a totality" in which "Allah controls every place -- the home, the classroom, the science lab, the halls of Congress."

Malik-Ali views all non-Muslim entities, anywhere in the world, as barriers preventing the spread of Islam. He supports the violent uprising of Muslims as a necessary action. In July 1999, Malik-Ali was an organizer and speaker at an event in San Francisco that praised Hamas and its actions.

He is also part of the Al-Masjid movement which is dedicated to creating an Islamic movement in the U.S.

Wild Thing's comment...........

Sure that makes sense, wait till someone is killed then do something about it. True there is freedom of speech, but sheesh I can't be in a movie theater and yell fire, I can't say out loud so others would hear me....I have a nice little bomb in my purse when boarding an airplane. There is a line that should not be crossed when it comes to our freedoms, being responsible for one thing, and certainly not promoting hate and violence.

But then these kinds of speeches come from the terrorists (the moderate Muslims aka the terrorists wanna be's) so apparently it is OK to do such things.

And they can all laugh at us as they USE our laws against us.

God Help us!!

I say it is NOT ok. It is dangerous!

As a Christian, I wonder how many they've allowed to have free reign on campus? How 'bout the neo-Nazis? Klan?

The left wing academia is selective about the free speech..it appears that as long as those beeing hit are not left wingers or ragheads it is okay...but don't let a hot head like me say anything bad about the gitdam ragheads or the thieving left wing socialists..

The ACLU, the NLG, the CPC and judges like John Koeltel are the ones letting them take over, soon free speech will be only for the leftists and the subversives, I'm not talking just about the street either, look at both houses of congress and the judiciary.Think of McCain-Feingold and the effects it has on the first amendment.

I believe in free speech for all even those with views I do not agree with, but it does appear that only certain groups are being sanctioned. The one good thing about what we see from this video is that their speech will expose them for what they really are.

Our responsibility, as Wild Thing is doing, is to bring awareness to what is occurring to as many as possible. Our ultimate goal should be to stand up against these individuals by making sure our voices are heard as well. They must learn that they are a small minority that does not stand a chance in reaping from the evil seeds they plant. We must face them at every opportunity and match the aggression they continue to demonstrate.

Many of us are complacent about most issues and simply watch from afar then gripe to those closest to us. Sometimes it may be necessary to miss work, the game on the television, couch time or the kid’s soccer match, to participate in these types of events and overwhelm them in attendance. We need to search out and be aware of these speeches taking place ahead of time not just after the fact. Each of us should do some part by keeping up with when these events are taking place on local college campuses and elsewhere then pass information along. We should also participate, taking as many with us as possible to show our strength in numbers.

I can think of no better way to show support for our military that protect us from afar than to stand up here and protect their country, their home. Our immediate involvement is needed, and for many reasons, but our complacency will have only one result, our complacency will kill us.

razOr,I don't know but if they are so determinted to have freedom for all of them then they would have to I would imagine.

Schools are just not like they used to be or at least not like I knew them to be.

GUY, I agree they sure are being selective about free speech. I wouldn't last long at all on a campus today. hahaha

Jack so true, it is not just on the streets or in schools, it is everywhere.

aAC I agree so much. We must never become complacent. Thanks so much.
