Satellite Blackout in Tehran

The government of Iran is going from building to building in Tehran, smashing satellite dishes. This can only be construed as an effort to cut Iranians off, as much as possible, from news originating in the outside world.

And from Deja vu -- Judith Apter Klinghoffer

Hundreds of police in Tehran have begun dismantling satellite antenna dishes from the city's rooftops - part of a campaign to prevent Iranians from watching Western television programmes. The move follows a recent police order that all satellite dishes - officially banned but tolerated until now - be removed. The campaign against satellite television was launched by the Minister for Culture and Islamic Orientation, Hassan Saffar Harandi, who said "we have to halt the West's cultural offensive," on Iran.

Some observers believe that the clampdown is aimed at keeping the government's control over news regarding Iran's dispute with the international community regarding its nuclear programme.

The government on Tuesday reiterated its intention to respond to a package of incentives, devised by the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, to persuade Tehran to drop its uranium enrichment plans.

A little more information:

Tehran, 16 August (AKI) - Hundreds of police in Tehran have begun dismantling satellite antenna dishes from the city's rooftops - part of a campaign to prevent Iranians from watching Western television programmes.

In recent months, all news coverage on the issue in Iran has had to be done with the approval of the Supreme Council of National Security, prompting people who wish to be informed by non-government sources to watch and listen to television and radio programmes broadcast from abroad.

Wild Thing's comment.....
If our government did that to us can you just imagine what would happen?! Even for people that seldom watch TV shows, news shows or care about world events. To be under that kind of government control sure shows me how afraid the Iran government is of their people finding things out. Little cowards one and all in that Iran government. But wait, are they still going to make those incessant stupid threatening videos they send to us that we see on FOX News, CNN and other networks?

They are worried about our 'cultural offensive'?

Then we should be actually launching one! There is no organised attempt to get western culture into Iran, whatever their government claims, but there should be.

ImAnutJob has taken a page from Hitler and the Nazi's playbook. Instead of controlling printed media, it's digital information. Same result though. The government can push its propaganda and there isn't any avenue for a differing voice.

And I forgot to add this. And he compares Israel and the Jews to Hitler and the Nazis?

This must be the wonderful freedom Israfil is talking about. Isn't freedom in Muslim countries, especially Iran, just peachy?

This is the freedom of most Muzzy societies, the freedom to follow the cult leaders, the society's absolving it's members of any guilt from killing it's own or any outsider. Freedom to worship five times a day, ensured by the Muttawa that it is in accordance with the Mullah's dictates. This is why there have been strident advances in their culture since 632. The advances they have made in 1474 years have just been published by Iran for the world to see and the verdict is in, they are still living in the dark ages, Israfil's world.
Google up Dearborn and Detroit and see if we have a similar culture growing here.
Here are just a few names to start the search: Nabih Ayad, Mohammed Abdrabboh, Imad Hamad, Mark E. Reene and Sheriff Mike Bouchard.
Yes the enemy of our freedom is in places like Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Saudi Arabia but we need to focus on the enemy within also.

Maybe you're right this time, Suricou. A Radio Free Iran would be a good idea. I'd also send them lots of beef jerky, Gummy Bears and Beach Boys albums. No one can resist that.

Yes... a couple of transmitters in adjacent countries, or satalites, and Iran could be saturated with a new station. Short of banning all radio recievers (hello black-market) or getting into an arms race of jammers that will leave much of their communications infrastructure unusable, there would be nothing they could do about it.

Im not sure how such action would fit into international law though.

Oh yes, Suricou. We must be concerned about International Law. The Iranians follow the letter.
