Department Of Homeland Security Is Buying 450 Million New Bullets

Business Insider

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office is getting an "indefinite delivery" of an "indefinite quantity" of .40 caliber ammunition from defense contractor ATK.

U.S. agents will receive a maximum of 450 million rounds over five years, according to a press release on the deal.

The high performance HST bullets are designed for law enforcement and ATK says they offer "optimum penetration for terminal performance."

This refers to the the bullet's hollow-point tip that passes through barriers and expands for a bigger impact without the rest of the bullet getting warped out of shape: "this bullet holds its jacket in the toughest conditions."

We've also learned that the Department has an open bid for a stockpile of rifle ammo. Listed on the federal business opportunities network, they're looking for up to 175 million rounds of .223 caliber ammo to be exact. The .223 is almost exactly the same round used by NATO forces, the 5.56 x 45mm.

The deadline for earlier this month was extended because the right contractor just hadn't come along.

Looks like the Department of Homeland Security means business.

Wild Thing's comment......

I thought this was inteiresting. So are they going to do a Fast and Furious this these bullets, I don't trust these people with Obama.

We do know one thing and that they're not going to be allowed to use these bullets to protect our borders.

DHS needs those hollow point bullets in case kids in wheelchairs or elderly nuns get too aggressive during TSA gropping inspections at airports.

Really, I don't know if this is an excessive ammo order or not for a Federal agency. It seems like it. I just acquired some ammo because there is now a run starting on gun and ammo purchases. Lots of people worried about obama getting reelected and then, with AG Holder, coming after our Second Amendment rights.

Tom, I noticed it too. Just picked up a few hundred rounds of 223. I need to get more.

Yep, I guess I'll be buying more ammo this weekend. Never can tell when the nazi brown shirts will be coming.

.223 Remington is actually a slightly shorter chambering (namely the bullet) than 5.56 NATO; i.e., you can shoot .223 Rem in 5.56 NATO weapons (though with less accuracy) but not the reverse (damage to chamber/barrel). However, Ruger (which makes the Mini-14 that fires .223 Rem) just received a massive order so they won't take any new orders until May. Hmm?
