Iran Test-fires Missiles Amid Nuclear Tension

Iran says it test-fires the longest-range missiles in its arsenal, capable of carrying a warhead and striking Israel, U.S. bases in the Mideast, and parts of Europe.

Iran state television says the powerful Revolutionary Guard has fired one of the longest-range missiles in its arsenal in a third round of tests meant to demonstrate the country's preparedness for an attack. (Sept. 28)

Iran test-fired missiles on Sunday to show it was prepared to head off any military threat, four days before the Islamic Republic is due to hold rare talks with world powers worried about its nuclear ambitions.

The missile maneuvers coincide with escalating tension in Iran's nuclear row with the West, after last week's disclosure by Tehran that it is building a second uranium enrichment plant.

News of the nuclear facility south of Tehran added a sense of urgency to a crucial meeting in Geneva Thursday between Iranian officials and representatives of six major powers, including the United States.

Iran will be put "to the test" in Geneva and a move to sanctions would follow if the talks failed, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told CBS.

An Iranian official warned "fabricated Western clamor" over the new plant would negatively affect the talks at which the six powers want Iran to agree to open its facilities to inspection to prove its program is for power and not nuclear weapons.

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's envoy to the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog, said, referring to Western condemnation of the plant: "This ... approach will have a negative impact on Iran's negotiations with the 5+1 countries."
He has said Iran is arranging International Atomic Energy Agency inspections of the plant "in the very near future."
U.S. President Barack Obama said Saturday the discovery of the secret nuclear plant in Iran showed a "disturbing pattern" of evasion by Tehran. He warned Iran Friday it would face "sanctions that bite" if it did not come clean.

Earlier this month, Obama dropped a Bush-era plan to deploy missiles in Poland that had been proposed as a shield amid concerns Iran was trying to develop nuclear warheads it could mount on long-range missiles.

Iranian media said Revolutionary Guards launched at least two types of short-range missiles on the exercise's first day on Sunday in central Iran and tested a multiple missile launcher.

"For all those who ... might harbor dreams about undertaking military invasion against our nation and country, a message of this maneuver is firmness, destructiveness, real and endless resistance," Iranian General Hossein Salami, head of the Guards' air force, told state television.

Iranian media said medium-range Shahab 1 and 2 missiles, which officials say have a range of 300 and 500 km respectively, would be test-fired Sunday evening.

State radio said the Guards Monday would test-fire the Shahab 3 missile, which Iranian officials say has a range of around 2,000 km, potentially putting Israel and U.S. bases in the Gulf within reach. It was last tested in mid-2008.

Iran conducts war games or tests weapons to show its resolve to counter any attack by foes like Israel or the United States.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who says any military action against Iran would only "buy time" and stresses the need for diplomacy, told CNN he hoped the disclosure of the second facility would force Tehran to make concessions

Neither the United States nor its ally Israel have ruled out military action if diplomacy fails to resolve the nuclear row.

US ships arrive in Israel ahead of joint drill

US Navy missile ships started arriving in Israel on Sunday ahead of next month’s joint missile defense exercise between the IDF and the American military’s European Command

Called Juniper Cobra, the exercise will include the Arrow missile defense system as well as three American systems - the THAAD, Aegis and PAC3 - that will all be deployed in Israel for the duration of the exercise

Iran test fired two types of long-range missiles on Monday, including the two-stage Sajil, state-run Press TV reported.

"We are still waiting for new reports about the missiles and whether they have hit the targets or not," Brig. Gen. Hossein Salami, Iran's air force commander, said on Press TV. "These are ... advanced long-range missiles and they were manufactured by the ... Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps."

He said the launches took place Monday morning.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps began a series of missile exercises Sunday to promote the armed forces' defense capabilities.

The tests, which are expected to conclude on Monday, are codenamed "Payghambar-e Azam 4" or "The Great Prophet 4," Press TV said.

If that is true, the missile brings Moscow, Athens, Israel and southern Italy within striking distance from Iran.

Iran's testing on Sunday included the Fateh-110, a short-range ground-to-ground missile, and Tondar-69, a short-range naval missile, the station said. Several models of medium-range Shahab missiles were tested at night, Press TV reporte

Wild Thing's comment......

This is VERY serious! sheesh Iran is really asking for it.

Fox News reported yesterday morning that Iran will next test the Shabib 3 missile within hours - 2,000k range (Israel within range)

It is VERY Serious! And Obama wants to talk to this nut loose behind the wheel? Today is Yom Kippur. I wouldn't put it past him to do something seriously stupid today. We need to blast them back to stone age! They have lied all along that it's only for nuclear energy and they're threatening our troops in Iraq and Aghanistan and Israel. Not good. On any levels!

I certainly wish I knew what was going on behind the scenes. The Iranians may be blowing a smokescreen and their missles may not be that capable. Who knows?

My biggest fear is the weak kneed president we have. I trust Israel or even France to take action before we do. This latest Iranian move sure shows the folly of obama cancelling the European missle shield.

Stupid is as stupid does. All we need is 300 Spartans, these morons don't learn. We got at least that many, our modern day Spartans.

As Tom said, its our pantywaist Prez. that's the worry.

Iran is a parer tiger just like us, we talk big and do nothing.

Now Israel on the other hand will definitely kick their ass and I'm hoping they do it soon and kick dirt in our CinC's face at the same time. Go Bibi!

It's time to put them B-2's to use and load them up with some GBU-28 Bunker Busters.

Found this one for you guys who fought in Vietnam. Thought you might enjoy this.

Tom, I agree.

"This latest Iranian move sure shows the folly of obama cancelling the European missle shield."

Like you said too Obama would be the last to
react to anything horrible imo.

Eddie (Locked & Loaded), I can just
imagine how BiBi is smoldering about
all of this. Thank goodness Israel
has BiBi. I wish we had a BiBi or
BiBi himself.
