McCain: Increase Military Support To Libyan Rebels

U.S. Sen. John McCain called for increased military aid Friday for Libya's rebels, including weapons, training and close air support for the opposition's battle to oust Moammar Gadhafi.

A day after the U.S. began flying armed drones to bolster NATO firepower and try to break a battlefield stalemate with Gadhafi's forces, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee gave a full-throated endorsement of the rebels.

The United States and other nations should recognize the rebels' political leadership as the "legitimate voice of the Libyan people," McCain said.

He called the rebels "patriots" with no links to al-Qaida, in contrast to what some critics have suggested, and he said they should receive Gadhafi assets frozen by other countries.

"They are my heroes,” McCain said of the rebels as he walked out of a local hotel in Benghazi. He was traveling in an armored Mercedes jeep and had a security detail. A few Libyans waved American flags as his vehicle drove past.

US secretary of state Hillary Clinton announced yesterday that the US would provide $25m of non-lethal items such as vehicles, radios and medicines to opposition forces.

Wild Thing's comment........

John McCain is making a jackass out of himself. He doesn’t get the “culture”. “The rebels are patriots”!, he asserts. Give me a break. sheesh. We have heard so much that many of the rebels are al-qaeda.

IMO there are no good guys in this. I wish we would stay ouit of this in Lybia.

The Jawa Report posted video of our new allies beheading a Libyan soldier. He has a video in which they chant Allahu Ackbar as they saw off a Libyan regime soldiers' head. And these are the people McCain wants us to call friend.

Whatever type of aid we give them will eventually be used against our troops.

I wonder who's footing the bill for McCain's so-called fact finding mission?

I decided several years ago that McCain was just nuts. I don't know why the good people of Arizona keep electing him.

I agree with you 100% WT. We should stay out of Libya. Let them weed out each other.

McCain is a joke. hsd no real idea of what a ground war is, having see it from a high flying jet. Did we not back the Taliban against Rusia, that turned out fine. What a rag bag group these rebels are, no disipline, must have some one supply them wtih ammo as they seem to delight is firing off countless rounds, even their anti air, and those rounds have to come down somewhere possibly accountning for somel of the non-combatants deaths.

Should have stayed the hell out of Libya. No plan, no exit strategy, so why the hell are we there.
