'Underwear Bomber's' Alarming Last Phone Call

ABC news

ABUJA, Nigeria, Dec. 31, 2009

The accused "underwear bomber" made a dramatic final call to his father that he found so alarming, the father approached Nigerian officials who took him directly to the CIA's station chief in the Nigerian capital, sources told ABC News.

Current and former officials of the Nigerian government, including a source close to the suspect's family, say Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, called his father from Yemen with the warning that it would be his last contact.

It has previously been reported that the man's father, prominent Nigerian banker Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, went to Nigerian and American officials Nov. 19 to warn them that his son had been radicalized by Islamic militants in Yemen.

ABC News' sources said that during Abdulmutallab's final call, he told his father the call would be his last contact with the family. He said that the people he was with in Yemen were about to destroy his SIM card, rendering his phone unusable.

A senior U.S. official briefed on the matter tells ABC News that the phone call prompted the father to contact Nigerian intelligence, fearing that his son might be planning a suicide mission in Yemen. The Nigerian officials brought Mutallab directly to the CIA station chief in Abuja Nov. 19.

The next day the embassy sent out a thin report to U.S. embassies around the world warning Adbulmutallab may be associating with extremists in Yemen.

The CIA official compiled two more robust reports following the meeting with the suspect's father. One was sent back to CIA's Langley, Va., the other remained in draft form in Nigeria and was not circulated until after the attempted attack on Christmas Day, according to a U.S. official.

In what has been seen as a possible failure to stop the bomber from boarding a U.S.-bound plane, the alert prompted counterterrorism officials to put Abdulmutallab's name into a database of more than half a million others that the U.S. suspects of ties to terrorism.

Abdulmutallab told federal officials after his capture that he spent a month at the home of an al Qaeda official in Yemen while he was trained for jihad, officials have told ABC News.

He left Yemen Dec. 7 and weeks later was aboard a Northwest Airlines flight that stopped in Amsterdam and then continued on to Detroit.

Union contradicts Napolitano

Politico

The pilots’ union at American Airlines said Wednesday that the Transportation Security Administration didn’t warn flight crews appropriately during the terrorist attempt on a Northwest Airlines flight on Christmas, Dow Jones reports.

The union, the Allied Pilots Association, wrote to American Airlines that “some pilots were left out of the loop” when TSA told some airlines to notify only pilots on inbound transatlantic flights, Dow Jones said.
“The TSA should have mandated that information about this security event be passed on to all airborne flights,” the APA wrote.

The letter seems contradict Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano’s comments that the “system worked” in responding to the terrorism attempt. Clarifying her remarks that were criticized, she said on the “Today” show, “once the incident occurred, moving forward, we were immediately able to notify the 128 flights in the air of protective measures to take, immediately able to notify law enforcement on the ground, airports both domestically, internationally, all carriers, all of that happening within 60 to 90 minutes.”

The APA said it suggested policy changes to the House Committee on Homeland Security, specifically that “airline managements immediately notify all airborne flights any time there is a Level 3 or Level 4 event,” Dow Jones said.

Wild Thing's comment........

Nigerian Intelliegnce contacted the CIA on Nov 19th.

The Obama administration had every clue but a Las Vegas neon sign flashing Terrorist here!

The tools and intelligence worked fine in this case. The big failures were the Obama decision makers in key positions who failed to act by ignoring the intelligence they received.

So when Obama places the blame on Bush is nothing but lies and distortions. And we need to remember too how Obama set a new tone when he took office and threatened to prosecute CIA officers for doing their jobs.

Obama is terrorizing Our constitution, Our economy, Our Bill of Rights, Our free-market economy, Our health care system, and if that's not enough He'll use Our Air force One to do a low fly over New York City just to gauge Our reaction.

Obama IS the enemy within. And Napolitano: “The System worked” and "if you quote me on that you are taking me out of context."

“...all 128 flights...”

On any given day, there are 5,000 flights in the air over the US. None of the domestic flights were notified, no flight crews were warned. This is as big a scandal as the bomber.

Napolitano is totally incompetent and needs to go. To trust the safety and security of the American people to her is unfathomable.

First she goes on CNN and says the 'system worked' in regards to the panty bomber. Then when she and her boss B. HUSSEIN Obama realize how completely the system FAILED, they trot her out on Monday to say the 'system worked' after the 'system failed'.

Now we realize from the pilot's union, that the system failed BEFORE the attempted bombing, and AFTER the attempted bombing. To assume only international flights were at risk while this situation was unfolding is beyond stupid. We had no information EITHER way that more bombers were in the air, either on domestic flights or international flights. To notify only the pilots on int'l flights while not telling the pilots flying domestic routes is beyond stupid. Either tell all or tell none, especially when you do not have the facts.

She outright lied about ongoing security in the wake of what happened on flight 523.

Apparently Baghdad Butch still can't get her story straight, and the American people deserve much more.

Vilmar has a good cartoon on why the Obama administration didn't heed the warnings of his father.

This is why positions like the head of DHS, the CIA and all departments concerned with security of our nation, should never be "Political Appointees".

These positions are too important to hand out as favors for support in the past. The people in these positions should at least have had some law enforcement and/or military background.

The decisions made by these organizatons should reflect the purpose of the organization, that being the security of this nation and it's citizens, not whether it is the "Politically Correct" move.

What Obama and his Administration are proving more and more, with each passing day,is how little respect they have for the positions that they hold.

This is not Community Organizing in Chicago!!!

The obama bunch are making American life more dangerous with their unreal policies. The "gang that can't shoot straight" is a sad comedy. Their lax regard to islamic terrorism will cost American lives.

I couldn't agree more with all of you.

We need dikes to stop the onslaught, not dykes.

Buy Ammo!!!

Ya know, I might be wrong here, but as I see it, OBAMA and Company are the biggest problems we face... They are afraid to offend those that want to kill us... We can't offend them any more, just call it like it is, go to war and make it a REAL war, with massive airstrikes on targets in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran... If they're going to hate us for being who we are, we may as well give the bastards a reason to hate us for what we DO too!

As long as abama's in the white house there won't be any of that. He'd rather apologize for the US of A and make friends with our enemies.

Tom, your right, the ""gang that can't shoot straight" sure is what they are and yes it is
sad and dangerous.

Jack, hahaha good one,I ageee so much,

Thanks for the link. Perfect song.

Posted by: Wild Thing at January 1, 2010 06:34 PM

Texas Fred, I agree, I want to bomb the heck out
of the terrorists.

Posted by: Wild Thing at January 1, 2010 06:35 PM

Mark, see thatis the huge problem.
Your right, Obama and his ilk to not
want to offend the enemy. Meanwhie
all of us, our troops and all who
support our troops understand that
war is not about playing nice it is
serious stuff and needs to be treated
that way.
