Mayo Clinic Rebukes Obamacare, How Will Media Respond?

Newsbusters

Political Punch

The Mayo Clinic on Monday issued a startling rebuke to the Obama administration coming down strongly against the healthcare reform proposal offered by House Democrats last week.

In a statement posted at the Clinic's Health Policy Blog, one of the most respected medical institutions in the nation said: "The proposed legislation misses the opportunity to help create higher-quality, more affordable health care for patients. In fact, it will do the opposite."

Obama has repeatedly praised Minnesota’s Mayo Clinic as a role model for health care.

“I think what’s important is to say to the American People that you should get the best possible care to make you well,” he told Diane Sawyer in June. “And that the measure of the quality of care is not quantity, but whether or not it is making you better. Now, what we’ve seen is that there’s some communities and some health systems that do this very well. Mayo Clinic, a classic example. In Rochester, Minnesota. People go there. They– spend about 20-30 percent less than some other parts of the country, and yet have better outcomes.”

But the Mayo Clinic is not so enamored of the House Democrats’ health care reform bill.

Given the reputation of this fine institution, it will be very interesting to see how Obama-loving media report this announcement.

On the Mayo Clinic’s health care blog, the clinic’s reaction was thus:

Mayo Clinic Website

“Although there are some positive provisions in the current House Tri-Committee bill – including insurance for all and payment reform demonstration projects – the proposed legislation misses the opportunity to help create higher-quality, more affordable health care for patients. In fact, it will do the opposite.

“In general, the proposals under discussion are not patient focused or results oriented. Lawmakers have failed to use a fundamental lever – a change in Medicare payment policy – to help drive necessary improvements in American health care. Unless legislators create payment systems that pay for good patient results at reasonable costs, the promise of transformation in American health care will wither. The real losers will be the citizens of the United States.”

Obama's love/ crush for Mayo Clinic is unrequited. Good for Mayo's! I really would hate to see a fine place like Mayos' sink to the depth's of being on the bus with Obama.

Good for the Mayo Clinic! I like their style. They were responsible for bringing my dad back when he had a heart attack in 1993 and was basically doa. They said he wouldn't survive the night (he was 56 years old) but he did, didn't need a pacemaker and survived another 7 years beyond that, even after having larynx cancer as well. Keep on fighting, Mayo. You're one of the best.
