AG Holder urges new hate crimes law

USA Today

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday that recent killings show the need for a tougher U.S. hate crimes law to stop "violence masquerading as political activism."

"Over the last several weeks, we have witnessed brazen acts of violence, committed in places that many would have considered unthinkable," Holder told the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs.

WHOM TO PROTECT? Christian conservatives fight expansion of hate-crimes law

He cited separate attacks over a two-week period that killed a young soldier, an abortion provider and a guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Federal agents and prosecutors are already involved in the local investigations of each attack.

The violence, he said, "reminds us of the potential threat posed by violent extremists and the tragedy that ensues when reasoned discourse is replaced by armed confrontation."

In order to stop that violence, he said, Congress should pass an updated version of hate crimes legislation, in order to more effectively prosecute those who commit violent attacks based on gender, disability, or sexual orientation.

The growing number of hate crimes against Hispanics also shows the need for tougher laws, Holder said.

"We will not tolerate murder, or the threat of violence, masquerading as political activism," Holder said. "So let me be clear, the Justice Department will use every tool at its disposal to protect the rights ensured under our Constitution."

Earlier, a leading civil rights coalition says there has been an increase in white supremacist activity since the election of the first African-American president.

The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund reported Tuesday that the economic downturn and fear of immigrants also contributed to the increase.

The report comes a week after a white supremacist killed a security guard at the U.S. Holocaust Museum.

The coalition reported the U.S. now averages a hate crime nearly every hour of every day. A special concern is the rising number of hate crimes committed against Hispanics and gays.

Wild Thing's comment.......

No mention of the US soldiers shot and one killed by an Islamic terrorist.

If hate were indeed a crime, Eric Holder is guilty as sin. And Eric, your fellow ‘Rats in Congress didn’t seem to feel it was appropriate to give our men and women in uniform those same protections. Wonder why, Eric?

Liberal Solution to all problems make more laws.

Let's get to the truth of the matter - this is simply an end run to circumvent freedom of speech. It is to make giving an opposing opinion from the common liberal ideal as being a crime.

Hate Crime? If murder isn't enough to prevent the act from taking place, making it a Hate Crime isn't going to stop it either.

So if a couple of Black men get caught burglarizing this White man's home is that a hate crime Holder? Blacks commit so many crimes a lot of those would have to be labeled hate crimes because they are committed against non-Blacks, elderly, disabled, Bhuddists, etc.

Is calling a group of people racists also a hate crime. If so, prosecute yourself Holder.

What is the fascination of the left and this Hate crime crap ? I guess it does two things. One, makes the left feel they care and two gives the slip and fall lawyers more work.

So what we got here is more feel-goodism for the left. Other than that the whole idea is useless.

Why are they wasting time and money on this? Don't we already have laws on the books against murder, assault, battery etc.? This serves no purpose.

BobF., very true, this Holder guy is
so obviously using these killings
for his own agenda.

Tom, exactly he could easily fall under
that just like you pointed out.

Posted by: Wild Thing at June 17, 2009 07:44 PM

Mark,I agree it is useless, what a waste
of time.

Posted by: Wild Thing at June 17, 2009 07:48 PM

Jim, I agree, we have plenty of laws
in the books and our courts barely
follow them now the way they let
bad guys off so easily.
This is a waste of time and money
what Holder is doing.
