DeMint to Force Vote on Bill Banning Fairness Doctrine

Senator to Force Vote on Bill Banning Fairness Doctrine

Business and Media Institute

Although a spokesman for President Barack Obama said the administration wouldn’t pursue the revival of the Fairness Doctrine, Republican Sen. Jim DeMint, S.C., wants Senate Democrats to go on the record one way or another on the issue.

DeMint, chairman of the Senate Steering Committee, said on Feb. 19 he will offer the Broadcaster Freedom Act as an amendment to the D.C. Voting Rights bill next week. The Broadcaster Freedom Act was introduced by Republican lawmakers last month and prevents the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from reinstating the Fairness Doctrine.

“I’m glad President Obama finally confirmed his opposition to the Fairness Doctrine, which attacks the right of free speech on talk radio, but many Democrats in Congress are still pushing it,” DeMint said. “With the support of the new administration, now is the time for Congress to take a stand against this kind of censorship. I intend to seek a vote on this amendment next week so every senator is on record: Do you support free speech or do you want to silence voices you disagree with?”
Although the Obama administration has come out publicly saying they would not pursue the Fairness Doctrine, several prominent Democrats have. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said it was "absolutely time to pass a standard.” Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, came out with a similar message, saying, “We need the Fairness Doctrine back.”. And former President Bill Clinton said, “You either ought to have the Fairness Doctrine or we ought to have more balance on the other side.”

Wild Thing's comment........

Bravo! I really like Jim DeMint, he has taken a stand often on things.

"Although a spokesman for President Barack Obama said the administration wouldn’t pursue the revival of the Fairness Doctrine, Republican Sen. Jim DeMint, S.C., wants Senate Democrats to go on the record one way or another on the issue. "

Here is a good example of you need to listen to what *O* says, not how he says it!

He won't "pursue the revival", but he does not say he will not stop congress from doing it, or vetoing it if it comes across his desk.

....Thank you Mark for sending this to me.

DeMint really is stepping up to the plate. I like to see that. We need a leader and he's doing just that. The Fairness Doctrine is NOT fair at all. It's the banning of conservative talk radio in favor of the current "blame America first" liberal pansies. We are heading down a path we shouldn't be and the liberal weenies have their eyes closed to the dangers of the future. They're the "la-la-la-la live for today and don't worry 'bout tomorrow" crowd. They'll be out of office by then and no one will remember them and the curse they brought to America's people.
We need Rush and his cohorts. They keep us honest and tell us the true picture.

"Fairness Doctrine"

I think most Liberals want their rep to vote for its revival for a really good reason.

After all, the word "fairness" is in it... and doesn't that sound nice?

Seriously though, I'm sure we haven't heard the last of this, even if Obama doesn't want it revived. He's been a left-wing socialist for a long time, and I expect him to pull a lot of stunts over the next 4 years.

Three cheers for Sen DeMint. He and a few other conservative members of the Senate show some backbone. They are few in number and a lot of Republican senators are still Rinos, but maybe in 2010 and 2012 we can add some more true conservatives.

They will come up with a real high falootin name for it. Right now, they are referring to 'Localism' for the bill. If one nitwit complains about Rush, then the show doesn't reach down to the Locals.

Everybody knows this is censorship of Free Speech, especially when that speech doesn't agree with the current congress and the current occupant of the white house.

Hopefully Senator DeMint can lodge a huge defense of Free Speech when push comes to shove. Token resistance won't do this time. Because shutting up the opposition on talk radio is huge on the libtard agenda. They already have the main stream press in their pocket, they get rid of Radio can the internet be far behind ?

Look at what the least common denominator did in the above post to bring down a newspaper clipping honoring heroes. This is nothing but censorship.

Lynn, I agree. I keep wanting to keep a list of the ones that take a stand, the true conservative politicians and then I forget to do it. haha But I think there are about 10 or 15 or so. I wish there were more of them.

Darth, thank you for the link. There are some good people, one day we will have more of them too.

Comrade Tovya, good point. Yes they love that word and to them fairness means if they have it their way, total control. haha Thanks.

I agree,I am very concerned about what Obama will do next, and then next. He has done a ton of things already and it has only been a month. yikes

Tom, I hope so too. Maybe the one good thing that will come from Obama's win is people waking up to seeing how we cannot have weakness on our side anymore. No more crossing the isle by our repulicans.

Mark, I agree so much. That is exactly what it is....."censorship of Free Speech"

I pray every day for Rush just to thank God for him and the others that we can listen to. I listen to so much talk radio it is a part of my life and Nick's too.

Regarding them going after blog's next it concerning too.

I keep thinking how Obama's team got several blogger shut down by their blog host. Mine is Hosting Matters and they are great. But the ones that started blogs with only one theme of Obama stuff several of them had to find to hosting companies for their blogs to be online. And that was just during the campaign and they did that. Very scary.
