Marine Sgt Daniel Gilyeat Get's Renovated Home

Daniel Gilyeat and his family are getting a renovated home from ABC's popular show, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."
Gilyeat is a father and Marine who served two tours in Iraq. On his second tour, which he volunteered for, he was injured on a mission when a bomb struck his vehicle.

Gilyeat suffered serious injuries and lost his left leg above the knee. In addition, his marriage ended and he suddenly became a single father. But 25 days after losing his leg, Gilyeat was up and walking with a prosthetic leg and inspiring other wounded soldiers by visiting them in hospitals and speaking with their families.

Household chores were difficult for Gilyeat because the home was not handicap-accessible. The floors were uneven and the doors were too small to get through.

The work on the home was done in 7 days.

Some behind-the-scenes looks at the upcoming episode that will aired Sunday, February 10, 2008.

"I have always been amazed by the spirit and motivation of Sgt Gilyeat. He is always a very firm and strong leader, but keeps himself approachable. This makes Daniel easy to like and easy follow, but you always know that you don't want to cross his path. Even when I was still a junior Marine finding my place in the unit, Sgt Gilyeat would find the time to talk with me and other new Marines and make up feel welcome, like we were part of the brotherhood. You can always see the gentleness in his eyes, but it's also easy to see that this is one guy who you want working with you, and not against you. I admire his rugged appreciation for all things Marine."

Wild Thing's comment.......

I have never seen this show but I am impressed how they support our troops like this. I tried to put the videos in some kind of order so you could get the feel of how this all came about.

If only our politicans could all be as supportive of our troops like we are learning how business's are, it would be so awesome.

This show is my 5 year olds favorite show! She waits all week for her show. She's upset it's not on this week because of the Oscars.
This episode was extremely heartwarming. This man, a single father of 4, is such a wonderfully caring man and truly deserved this beautiful home. I cried through this one.

This is great. What a great surprise for Sgt. Gilyeats.

The morons in Berkely could learn a thing or two from these wonderful people who put this all together.

I have only seen a few snippets of Extreme Makeover. I have heard that they always select a deserving family and Sgt Gilyeat is no exception. It is amazing how they can demolish, then completely build a new home in 5 days. It looks great.

Daniel Gilyeat is certainly an articulate fellow, and very deserving of the new home.

I am so very glad that the majority of the American public is supporting our warriors and veterans in this war. It is grand that they don't have to come home to indifference or hostility.

This is the first time I have seen anything about that particular show. It was the right thing to do, this is what true humanitarians do for one another. Ditto what Tom said.

Lynn thank you for sharing about it. I plan on watching it now. I had never heard of it before.

It really had me crying to watch these videos of it, just so happy how people respect our soldiers like this.

Mark, I agree.

Those vile morons in Berkely, and they will never know how it feels to even be able to say thank you, it makes a persons heart so proud and so filled with joy just to be able to say to a soldier thank you sir for serving our country.

Tom.........." am so very glad that the majority of the American public is supporting our warriors and veterans in this war"......and your soooooo right they are too.

There are many more people supporting our troops and appreciate our Veterans then those who do not. It just sometimes feels like the opposite only because the media plays up to the bad people more then those that know the cost of our freedom.

Jack yes, this is what Americans should do to say thank you. Even if it is just smaller things anything is possible.

I have heard of organizations that take care of pets while the service man/woman is away. Others that will house sit for a family when the soldier comes home so the family can go away together for awhile to to a little trip. All kinds of things.
