US Considering Terrorist Label for Iran's Revolutionary Guards

US Considering Terrorist Label for Iran's Revolutionary Guards
voa news

The Bush administration is reported to be ready to declare Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps a "specially designated global terrorist" organization.

If the move goes forward, it would be the first time the United States has added an armed forces unit of any sovereign government to its list of terrorist groups. The designation allows the U.S. to freeze any assets the group, its members, or subsidiaries may have in the U.S.

According to the reports published late Tuesday on the web sites of the Washington Post and the New York Times, the move reflects escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran over Iran's nuclear activities and U.S. allegations of Iranian support for insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Tehran denies all U.S. allegations and says its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, senior administration officials say a final decision has not yet been made, and that there still is an internal debate whether to target the entire Iranian corps or only its al-Quds force wing.

In recent weeks, U.S. officials have complained of growing involvement of the al-Quds force in providing support for insurgents.

Iran has been on the U.S. State department's list of state sponsors of terrorism since May 1984.

Wild Thing's comment........

Why “consider” it???? Just do it. Stop playing nice with people. I hope it’s not just talk. I think a confrontation with Iran is unavoidable...I’d rather see it on our terms and schedule.

How about putting Iran's Revolutionary Guards, and Iran's navy and air force, on a TARGET list. I wonder if we are doing all we can to support anti-government movements in Iran? The way our State Dept is functioning these days I kinda worry that we are negotiating to negotiate to maybe negotiate to possibly talk to internal anti-Iranian forces instead of outright supporting them.

Ya know, here's what really pisses me off, Bush wants to make war, but he wants NICE war, he doesn't want to anger the enemy... Bush is, in my opinion, an idiot... If we have to make war, by God, make war and kill everything big enough to die, don't worry about the 'feelings' of your enemy, worry about killing him... War isn't a matter for the weak brained or the PC, and I am afraid Bush is both, I'm not anti GWoT, not by a LONG shot, but if we're not going to get REALLY serious about it, stop playing games and bring our men and women HOME...

They are a terrorist group! Always have been.
It's time to stop playing games and worrying about how we're viewed by the rest of the world and just do what we need to do.
And we really can't bring the kids home yet. Not with Peewee Handjob in the next country over--he wants the gulf, he wants the oil--he knows that for us, without the oil, we can't financially survive and he's counting on us to be weaklings.

Steve, yes and I hope they stick to it.

Tom, maybe so, I just hope we don't promise to back the anti-Iranian forces and be a no show. I will never forget the time we had promised to back that group that said they had Osama in their sights and we pulled out. That was during Clinton's regime if I remember right. I might be wrong.
