China Campaigns Tries To Woo Back International Trust

China has launched a new campaign to restore international trust in its products with a weeklong television series defending the country's safety standards.

But new allegations of unsafe Chinese goods emerged Monday when New Zealand said it was investigating children's clothing found to contain dangerous levels of formaldehyde. The chemical is used to give clothes a permanent press effect and also as an embalming fluid and it can cause problems ranging from skin rashes to cancer.

The new television campaign titled "Believe in Made in China" follows discoveries of high levels of chemicals and toxins in a range of Chinese exports from toys to toothpaste and fish.

The first program in the series aired Sunday on China Central Television's economic channel and featured the head of a quality watchdog criticizing the recent furor over the quality of Chinese exports as "demonizing China's products."

"Personally, I believe it is new trend in trade protectionism. Although recalls are necessary, it is unfair to decide that all products made in China are unqualified," Li Changjiang, director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, said on the 90-minute segment.

Li said his department was doing everything possible to monitor product quality, especially after recalls of millions of toys by Mattel Inc., the world's biggest toy maker, because of lead paint and small magnets that can be swallowed by children.

No injuries have been reported in last week's global recall of 19 million toys, including Barbie and "Sarge" cars based on the character from the movie "Cars."

"I'm here to tell you have faith in 'Made in China,'" Li told a group of foreign and Chinese executives and journalists invited to view the show.

The programs can be seen only in China and will feature interviews with Chinese producers and officials as well as foreign buyers and chambers of commerce, CCTV said on its Web site.

Not one mine either.
It's time to bring those companies back to America, where at least there are standards on how we do things and make things for the public.

I do my damndest to avoid Chinese made products. I scan for those three tiny hidden words, "made in china". I don't shop Walmart or Radio Shack. Guess What! Chinese made is EVERYWHERE. Now we find out it is in our food products. We are the breadbasket of the World, and yet we import Chinese food products! Most traditional American brand names now manufacture overseas.

OK Folks. Go right back to politicians and big business for the cause of this. To make bigger $$ our greed is leading to imported goods, food and labor. All of it eventually more costly to America as well as destroying our very successful culture. We are exporting our manufacturing base and our technology to a country that would like to take over as the Worlds super power. We are immigrating labor that retains it's Third World culture.

We are self destructing.

A good majority of your auto parts are now made in China. I'm wondering of the quality of some of these parts like wheel bearings and brake rotors. Inferior steel and failure of these items can lead to catastrophic results.

... so the Communist Red Chinese - the atheists that abort female fetuses - poisoned our pets a few months ago, and sprayed Mattel Toys with lead paint to kill our children, are NOW conducting war games with the Russians! We are stupid enough to give the Chinks tens of millions for next year's Summer Olympic games (that begin on 08-08-08)? Revelation states the Bear and the Dragon will converge on Israel in the final days...and WE THE PEOPLE just don't get it! - The Mongol Ghost of Lord Temujin Genghis Khan 2007

I hear all the sniveling from the leftists about our use of oil contributing to the moslem hordes yet these same gutless whiners invest in, buy from and grant China favored nation status. This is the same nation which slaughtered millions of it's citizens from 1927-1950 under the Communist revolution which started in 1921 under Sun Yat-sen with the aid and assistance of the Soviet Union, ending in 1949 under the leadership of Mao Zedong. The blood red hands of Mao killed millions more, the Chinese and Soviet Union agitated the Communist North Koreans into invading the South. Both China and the Soviet Union supplied arms, advisors and supplies to the North Korean invaders, with China even sending in ground troops. The same scenario was presented in 1960 against South Vietnam and Cuba, the Soviets built the Iron Curtain to keep it's citizens from escaping Communist oppression and slaughter. Look about the world today, Darfur, North Korea, Iran, Syria and Lebanon. Who is backing them in arms and military training? China and Russia. Most people don't know that the Chinese Army, the PLA, is self sufficient, funded by it's own industries, whether they be arms sales or toys. NORINCO(G) is sometimes referred to as the Ordnance Industry Group. China North Industries Group, NORINCO (G) that is busy every day supplying our enemies.

The Chinese army marked its 80th birthday with " the army will have zero tolerance of "Taiwan independence." Until 1998 the Chinese Army directly had industries that supplied both arms and civilian products for sale. In 1999 they restructured COSTIND’s responsibilities, reformed and went civilian, maintaining control but letting civilian businesses do the work. General Armaments Department (GAD) which represents the PLA interests whereas COSTIND, as a civilian agency, now mainly handles industrial planning and the administrative affairs of defense firms. Also access by Chinese firms to foreign weapons technologies is an additional variable. It has facilitated improvements in Chinese defense production capabilities. Aviation co-production with the Russians have helped Chinese aviation enterprises expand their knowledge of manufacturing fourth generation aircraft. The Israelis have provided assistance with avionics and air-to-air missiles; and the French have assisted with the development of air-to-air and surface-to air missiles. There is even some concern about WMD being supplied to Iran via China. So who is doing the most harm to our future, the enemy within that we unconsciously support or the external enemy we actively depose? We have sold our souls for a cheap product. Buy American!!! If you can find it.

If the public understood how business operates we would not have the cheap Chinese imports. But the public demands high wages then shops at Walmart. Not only that the dim-a-crits want to keep putting the tax burden on the producers of this country and use the taxes for income redistribution. Business is in business to make a profit and when they can not make a profit business either closes the doors are goes offshore where the business climate is conducive to profit.

I don't blame business but I do blame government and the people who support the current government.

Lynn,I agree, I sure wish we could do that and bring these companies back to the USA.

Posted by: Wild Thing at August 21, 2007 11:43 PM

Tom, I tried that in just one shopping trip. And saw the same thing, everything I wanted was made in China and for me I never knew the stuff I was looking for was made outside the USA.

Posted by: Wild Thing at August 21, 2007 11:47 PM

Bob, all that is so confusing to me. Why on earth can't we make our own of a lot of this stuff. I know it is the price of labor for one thing, I think they get 40 cents a day in China so it keeps the cost down on products.

Darth, your right, it is all in the Bible.

Jack thank you so much and thank you for the links as well.
That is the thing buy if if we can find it. I did an experiment this last weekend and it was impossible for most of my list I had, only a few things I was able to switch to only made in America. Sad, scary and outragous.
