TB-Infected American Takes Flights

TB-Infected American Takes Flights

Feds Worry Others Were Infected
ATLANTA -- A man with a rare and dangerous form of tuberculosis may have spread the disease to passengers and crew on two trans-Atlantic flights earlier this month, federal health officials said Tuesday.

Centers for Disease Control officials released information about the passenger and called for people on the same flights -- especially those who sat within two rows of him -- to get checked for the infection.

The infected patient traveled on two trans-Atlantic air flights and, in doing so, may have exposed passengers and crew to the extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis.

Which Flights?

The patient flew from Atlanta to Paris on May 12, arriving on May 13, on Air France flight 385. He returned to North America on May 24, on Czech Air flight 104, from Prague to Montreal. (Note: Earlier versions of this story incorrectly listed the Czech Air flight number.)

The man then drove into the U.S. He is hospitalized in respiratory isolation, according to the World Health Organization. It was reported that he was under federal quarantine, the first time a patient has been placed in that situation since 1963. The president must sign off on that step.

The patient was potentially infectious at the time of the flights to and from Europe, and so CDC officials recommended medical evaluation of cabin crew members on those flights, as well nearby passengers, according to the World Health Organization.

Wild Thing's comment...........

I don’t know why the government is having such a fit over this. They let thousands of illegals cross the border each year with TB and other nasty diseases such as cholera, diphtheria, plague, leprosy, malaria, and viral hemorrhagic fevers and probably with AIDS too.

Close the border! TB was gone in the US before the border was thrown open!!!!

This is happening more and more--especially since Illegals don't get medical checkups before coming here.
Either they don't know they're sick or they just flat out don't care.
I don't want my kids getting sick with something that isn't treatable or cureable because some illegal had something and coughed on my kid.
We ought to be up in arms about this!
We ought to be flaming mad!

In the headline of a Bob McCarty Writes™ post May 3, I raised this question: Will Liberals View Terrorism & TB in Similar Ways? Now, it seems we're getting the opportunity to find out. It's going to get interesting.

Send this infected guy on an "all expense paid" vacation to Iraq, Afganistan, Beruit, Lebon., and Iran. Let's see what he can do.

This guy was told not to travel, yet he surreptitiously flew into that great bastion of security, Canada, then drove across an open border into the US. He knowingly broke international laws yet he's a victim in the media's eyes. With meaningless laws what do we have to do to protect ourselves? I'm thinking we need an unrestricted bounty system, just to pay the costs of the ammunition.
Case in point, back in January I was travelling to Tacoma, WA. when I had to stop for an idiot in the middle of a local bridge, this SOB had on his Taliban clothing, a turban, homespun camel hair jacket, coarse black pants with his head wrapped in a dirty grey diaper, his right hand had been lopped off at the wrist. Was he was here visiting his raghead relatives or 'immigrating'? But in his arrogance he was in his uniform and blocking traffic just to look into a local estuary from the center of the bridge. What was he looking for or at? A place to put explosives to take out the bridge or place an IED? It's events like this that disturb my nature.

I don't think that the CDC is being entirely forthcoming with information about the extent of the problem with drug resistant TB. In today's article about the groom being detained by the CDC because he has XDR-TB, they would have you believe that this is an isolated incident and the first of it's kind in the United States. There is at least one other similar case in Phoenix (http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=07/04/06/142246). Is this a case of CDC trying to downplay the problem with XDR-TB or are they just unaware of the other cases in the US (and, if that is the case, why?).

They bring so much desease here and then spread it to our schools.

Bob, wow thank you and thank you for the link to it too.

Steve, if we could direct him straight to the insurgents that would be ok with me. I just wouldn't want our troops to get this man's TB. But you have a good idea Steve.

Jack that just makes me so angry. To be told NOT to travel and then he does, he might as well be labeled a killer.

Mike thank you for the link and the information.

What an arrogant SOB. Claiming they didn't forbid him to travel. For an educated man, he could use a good dose of common sense. If people keep acting like that, we will start putting all the ill in isolation like they did generations ago. He needs to read the book the "Hot Zone."

This guy knowingly endangered other people and, based on the panic reaction, he was the potential igniter of an epedemic. No different from an knowingly HIV infected man who sleeps with many women. This man is a low life of a high order who recklessly endagered many lives. If these are the facts, his destination should be jail for a long time and his fiancee would do well to break the engagment. Then there is the unbeleivable coincidence of his father employed as a scientist at the CDC. What did he know and when?

This guy commited a selfish reckless act with complete disregard for others that he would come in contact with....should be punished.
The border guard that allowed him to enter the United States after being warned to hold him and not to allow him to continue on, should lose his job. It is no wonder so many illegal people are getting thru with people like this guarding movement on our borders.

Is it just me or is anyone else uneasy that his new father-in-law works with infectios diseases such as 'TB'
