Killing Rampage at Virginia Tech Campus

Second Male May Be Involved in VA Tech Massacre
Police Cite Person of Interest in Dorm Killing; Dead Gunman Yet to Be ID'd

ABC news

A tranquil college campus in Virginia became a killing field Monday morning. At least 33 people are dead in the worst mass shooting in modern American history.

A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday, killing 33 people and wounding another 30 before he was killed, police said.

On the Web site, Tech reported the shootings at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people, and said there were "multiple victims" at Norris Hall, an engineering building.

Campus police have identified a person of interest who is not currently in police custody. Police say the person of interest is a male who knew the female who was killed in the original double homicide at the West Ambler Johnston Hall dormitory. Flinchum also said he is not a student and that he knew the female who was killed in the original double homicide.

Two guns were recovered, a 9 mm pistol and a .22-caliber pistol.

Flinchum said they have ruled out the possibility of a murder-suicide in the first shooting, and that investigators have a preliminary identification of the shooter involved in the Norris Hall shooting. The police will not release the identity at this time.

When asked to describe the scene at Norris Hall, where the second shooting took place, Flinchum called it, "one of the worst things I've seen in my life."

While Flinchum would not name any of the victims, he did say university staff members were among the dead.

Some students question why administrators did not cancel classes after the first shooting, and why it took more than two hours to inform the university community via e-mail about the shootings.

According to Steger, the administration locked down West Ambler Johnston Hall dormitory after the first shooting. But classes weren't canceled because the shooting was believed to be tied to a domestic dispute and campus police believed the shooter had left the campus.

"Schools should be places of safety and sanctuary in learning," President Bush said from the White House. "When that sanctuary is violated, the impact is felt in every American classroom and every American community."

Wild Thing's comment......

This is an unspeakable tragedy. Prayers for the loved ones and families of those killed. And prayers too for those injured and healing emotionally for all the victims.

Now we watch while they begin to blame guns, Bush, or anyone else except for the actual kiler for these murders. Teachers should be trained how to use a gun and just think if some of the teachers had been able to have a gun, say locked in their desk they could have done something to at least stop some of the killings that occured.

Thanks Chrissie, you read this the same as I do. Blame everyone especially legitimate gun owners for the failures of liberalism. Before all the death counts were confirmed Jim Brady's bunch had issued a release on gun control. http://bradycampaign.org/media/release.php?release=884
They and the Reverend Fred Phelps have a lot in common. Lowlifes using human tragedy for their own political leverage.

This is an unspeakable tragedy. what goes through someone's mind to make them do something like this?
To me, it's immaturity. This person didn't stop to think how many families he would destroy or what that person he just killed might have done down the road to better our society. If you want to kill yourself, fine, but do yourself first and don't hurt anyone else.
There are better ways of dealing with emotions and anger.
I do pray for all those families affected--I am deeply, powerfully sorry for your loss.
You are in my heart.

This is typical of the left trying to make a political statement out of somebody elses grief.

This is almost the 41 st aniversary of the University of Texas Tower shootings, where ironically the casualties were almost equally reversed. Charles Whitman killed 15 and injured 31. In part because some Professors had their Deer Rifles at the campus and were shooting back at Whitman, who was perched on top of the Clock tower(307 feet high) in the center of the campus.

One eye witness said, an English Professor went through 3 boxes of Ammo returning fire at the tower, this action is credited with keeping the number of Killed lower than it could have been.

But the first thing the left wants to do is to ban guns, their argument is hollow as usual and the victims of this act still suffer but they will go on, but the left will make their case and probably Blame Bush. They will use this grief as an excuse to take yet another freedom from us, for our own good.

I really wish they wouldn't worry about how stupid I am but worry about taking care of the security of this country.

Yup, I saw a reporter on MSNBC calling for the reinstitution on the ban of high capacity magazines.

Skipper at BMEWS made this interesting statement.

"I’m waiting for more details to come out before I say too much. Right now the media is in a feeding frenzy. It will be interesting to watch as the finger-pointing begins. For my money, the problem begins with the way entry visas are issued. This is not the first time someone with a student visa killed people. Remember 9/11?"

Because everyone starts accusing 'The Left' of exploiting this for political purposes, I would like to list the different spin placed on the event by various right-leaning blogs (Counting only posts, not comments):

1x "This happened because we are teaching evolution." (Curt Siebold)
2x "If all the teachers had guns in their desks this wouldn't happen." (And Rightly So)
1x "The shooter was forign, so this must be a terrorist attack."
1x "This happened because America has turned away from God."
1x "The Left are going to explot this suffering to support their political causes." (Here)

I cant recall where I read the others... around somewhere.

2x "If all the teachers had guns in their desks this wouldn't happen." (And Rightly So)

Well, Raven, countries as diverse as Russia and Thailand have done just that, to ward off attacks on schools from--you guessed it--Muslim terrorists. To say nothing of Israel. (In Israel, the armed teacher more likely than not is a reservist already).

Has it been confirmed that the shooter isn't a student? I heard another report saying he was a Chinese national here on a student visa? (Oh, my mistake, that is the 2nd "person of interest", apparently not a suspect).

What gets me is this:

1. Who on earth are we letting into this country, especially after 09/11?

2. Why did the University sit on this for nearly THREE HOURS, doing nothing? (The email to students was a nice touch, fat chance people coming for morning classes would ever read it.)

3. And the university did nothing for three hours even though this happened in their own dorm? Even my alma mater, the University of Caliphony at Bezerkley, where pandemonium was the norm and winos and halfway house people often wandered the campus, would have issued an APB, locked down the dorms, broadcast a full alert, called out all the campus cops to patrol, and alerted the neighboring City of Berkeley PD and the Oakland PD.

An armed citizenry is wrong, says the left, "rely on the authorities." The same authorities who sat on this information for three hours for public relations reasons.

I think I'm going to puke.

From what I can understand, the police and campus authorities both thought the incident was over with after the first attacks - and so saw no reason for further disruption. The second set were by a different person, in a seperate building on campus.

The rumor mill is at full capacity: Various news services have reported Shooter 2 to be either Chinese or Korean, and on a student visa.

Since the last post, I also add that two people have openly started blaming the attacks on violent computer games.

Update: The suicide murderer is one person, about three hours apart, a Korean immigrant, and a Virginia Tech student. Sad, as apparently he came from by all accounts a reasonable family:

Hopefully this ends the rumor mill.

It appears this shooter was truely crazy. We may never know his motive.

I happened to be in Austin the day of the Texas Tower shooting by Charles Whitman. The radio was asking citizens with high powered rifles to please aid the police at the tower. Shortly, the request was reversed as they soon had plenty of armed citizenery answering the call.

I will join with those who call for at least allowing teachers and faculty to be armed if they prefer to. It was reported knowledge that the VT campus did not allow concealed permit holders to bring their arms on campus. I don't know if this whacko knew that, but it may have influenced him. The recent shooting toll in a mall in Salt Lake City was lessened by an armed off duty policeman.

Especially in this age of terrorism, drugs and just plain crazy people, I think an armed citizenry is very important. I tend to like the methods most states require to issue carry permits to citizens. In another case in Tyler, Texas recently a licensed armed citizen saved several lives by shooting back at a beserk jealous husband with an AK47 shooting people in the city's courthouse square. The permit holder was killed, but police credit him with saving three other lives as he interferred with the gunman. The gunman was then killed by police.

Its too Sad , God Bless the victims of this tragedy .

About those who blame the guns ....
In France we have a lot of car crash , some poeople drive without autorisation , others under alcohol , we don' blame cars constructors or cars , we blame this comportemment . A car can became a weapon . In France and in Germany we have some sad storys about criminels who shoot innocents . In a college of Germany , and in a meeting with the mayor of a small French town .
The problem in Europe specially in France , those who have gun are the same who burn our cars screaming Allah is Big , in the suburb of Paris some jung immigrant have A K 47 and shoot police cars , and fire fighters trucks , beacausse they represent the State . Good people live in fear , police desert the suburb and its realy difficult for a french policeman to use his gun , but the criminal can use it without a problem . For me America is saffer than my country , we have the same problems , and worst our politicians deffend bad guys , they find some excuses with " you know they are poor " excuse me but they drive BMW with money of drugs

Suricou:

Obviously, in your weird kind of way, you would see that the "right" is exploiting this in the same way as the left.

In your spectacular list of five odd remarks, the first is silly, the second is true, the third is plausible, the fourth is a harmless position taken by a religious person, and the fifth is true yet you offer the previous four to disprove it.

Amazing Suricou logic. Impressive.

Suricou

Since the last one is mine I shall respond to it.

But after visiting your blog I decided not to it is just not right to assault an unarmed man.

Afterall, the nonsense I read there makes up for anything I could possibly say.

God bless our Second Amendment of the United States! Guns don't kill people...people kill people. Cars don't kill innocent drivers that were in the wrong place at the wrong time - drunk drivers do! The Demliblunatics can outlaw guns and our Constitutional right to own firearms, after they outlaw cars and alcohol!
Law enforcement officers will tell you the bad guys will always get illegal firearms.
